CD REVIEW

Putumayo Kids Presents New Orleans Playground

top image

Every kid in New Orleans grew up singing the "Audubon Zoo" song. In reality, the song is called "They All Ask'd for You," by The Meters. It's one of my favorites on this CD, which brings back many memories of my own childhood. Take this verse (and these are the "official" lyrics!):  "I wennon down to dee Audubon Zoo And day all axt fuh you. Duh mounkeys ast, duh tiguhs ast And duh elephant axt me too!"  I dare you not to sing it all day long. Though the CD may be meant for children, it's just as much fun for adults. Dr. John sings "Row Row Row Your Boat," Charmaine Neville breaks out into a "Second Line," and to wrap things up, well-known street performer Hack Bartholomew sings one of New Orleans' most famous songs,  "When the Saints Go Marchin' In."  It's the icing on this particular king-cake.

Besides the music, the liner notes (in 4 languages) are particularly useful and interesting. There's a paragraph about every song - its meaning, its heritage - written like a story so that kids will understand. For example, "On Skip to My Blues, Buckwheat Zydeco is playing the blues, a type of music that hasdeep roots in African-American culture and is one of the building blocks of rock and roll."

Putumayo Kids is one of the world's leading children's record labels, and is committed to introducing children to other cultures through music from around the world.

A non-profit organization, a portion of the proceeds from New Orleans Playground goes to benefit the Louisiana Children's Museum.

CLICK HERE to learn more about Putumayo Kids and view their extensive collection. Also, in response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, they are re-releasing Caribbean Playground and will be donating 100% of proceeds from the sale of each CD to The Red Cross.
